A Fat Lib Look at GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications: A Three-Part Series"A Fat Lib Look at GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications

With 1 in 9 Americans having ever taken a GLP-1 medication, the healthcare landscape for fat people is changing rapidly. Weight-centric and weight biased healthcare has made navigating the new environment especially confusing and treacherous for providers and patients.

Fat patients deserve access to the full picture regarding GLP-1 medications for weight loss, but in a fatphobic system like the Medical Industrial Complex, that can feel almost impossible. We aim to break down the research and science underlying GLP-1 medications to provide a clearer and grounded look at these medications through a fat liberation lens.

  • Session 1: GLP-1 Basics for Informed Consent will provide an overview of the basics of GLP-1 medications approved for weight loss from how they work to their effectiveness and side effects, with an emphasis on the details providers need to provide full informed consent.
  • Session 2: The Influence of Weight Bias on GLP-1 Research Design, Interpretation, and Healthcare Recommendations will focus on the existing research base and the ways weight bias has skewed research design and interpretation; and discuss the gaps in current research.
  • Finally, Session 3: Ethical Considerations in GLP-1 Care for Weight Loss will take the foundation of what we learned in sessions 1 and 2 to inform a nuanced discussion of ethical considerations when providing liberatory care and/or advocating for change in the healthcare system.

Join us for this rich and informative series to support you whether you are a healthcare provider or a fat patient in navigating the complexities of GLP-1 medications for weight loss!
